Every Story Has a Heartbeat — Don’t Let Your Music Be the Weak Link

Every story has a heartbeat — a rhythm that carries your audience from the first frame to the final moment. That heartbeat is made of story beats — the glances, pauses, breaths, and decisions that shift the energy and spark emotion. But these moments aren’t just seen… they’re heard. Music shapes the emotional impact of each beat. The wrong track can pull your audience out of the story, while the right track becomes the pulse that keeps them hooked.

What is a Story Beat and Why Does Music Matter?

A story beat is one of those defining moments that moves your narrative forward — the emotional glue holding your story together. Music gives that moment weight, depth, and memorability.

Here’s why music is critical for storytelling:

  1. Sets the emotional tone instantly — Before a single word is spoken, the first note tells your audience how to feel.

  2. Shapes the pacing of your narrative — Music can slow things down for intimacy or build tension for action.

  3. Acts as an invisible character — A great score feels like another presence in your scene.

  4. Elevates key moments — The right music makes emotional peaks more powerful and valleys more poignant.

  5. Makes your story unforgettable — Audiences often remember the way a scene felt more than the exact dialogue.

Case Study: Scoring Caminandes: Llamigos for NATSIMO SCI

One of the most powerful reminders of how music brings story beats to life came during the 2024 NATSIMO Screen Composer Intensive. Under the mentorship of Ken Francis, and in collaboration with Jessica Wells from Jigsaw Music, I had the privilege of scoring the open-source animated short Caminandes: Llamigos.

Each moment in the animation — a comedic pause, a playful glance, a burst of movement — needed its own musical heartbeat. I crafted the score to follow these beats closely, using the music not just to accompany the action but to enhance its rhythm and emotional punch.

The real magic came when my score was brought to life by a string quartet and 4-piece brass section at Trackdown Studios, a space where some of cinema’s most iconic scores have been recorded. Hearing my music performed by such talented musicians, perfectly synced to each story beat, was an unforgettable experience — and a powerful lesson in how the right music can make a story breathe.

How to Avoid the “Generic Stock Track” Problem

You’ve perfected your lighting, editing, and performance… but then you drop in a stock track that sounds like it belongs in a corporate PowerPoint. Scene ruined.

Here’s how to make sure your music always supports your story:

  1. Match the emotional arc — Choose tracks that rise and fall in sync with your scene.

  2. Skip the clichés — Avoid overused stock tracks that lack originality.

  3. Treat music as part of your design — Give it the same creative attention as cinematography or scriptwriting.

  4. Use music to reveal subtext — Instrumentation and tempo shifts can say more than words.

  5. Curate intentionally — Build a trusted library that reflects your style and brand.
